Trees play an essential role in urban environments: they help combat the urban heat islands, capture air pollutants, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of a neighbourhood. The shade provided by trees plays a key role in mitigating the urban heat island effect and reducing the impacts of heatwaves, which are becoming more frequent with climate change. The absence of trees on some private properties leads to greater heat production over parking spaces and streets.

This educational project aims to raise public awareness about the importance of urban trees and to demonstrate their part in reducing the urban heat island effect. The project also seeks to promote local biodiversity, as plant heritage is valuable but vulnerable to extreme weather, pest infestations, and disease. By increasing species diversity within the city’s tree population, we can reduce the risk that a single weather event or infestation wipes out a significant portion of the urban canopy. We aim to highlight the importance of protecting biodiversity and allowing trees to function as climate moderators in urban areas.

Trees do so much for us…

Français

Students involved in this project have inventoried trees in the central part of parc Jacques Cartier, and also at Bishop’s University and université de Sherbrooke. An interactive map of trees was created: click on the link below to access it. Please note that this is a huge endeavour that will continue in the long run. Be understanding if you spot errors and please let us know!
